What is an internship?

The National Association of Colleges and Employers [NACE] provides this definition: An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.

What are the employer advantages of having an intern?

  • Find future employees.  An internship program is an inexpensive recruiting tool. Implementing an internship program means you have an on-going pipeline of future full-time employees.
  • Test-drive the talent.  It's a human resources reality: A new employee makes a solid impression in the interview, but then just doesn't gel with your current team or your company's way of doing things. Because of this, hiring someone as an intern is the most effective way to evaluate their potential as a full-time employee. The opportunity to evaluate prospective employees while they are working for the organization can also significantly reduce the costs in finding new talent.
  • Increase productivity.  Setting up an internship program allows you to take advantage of short-term support.
  • Increase employee-retention rate.  According to NACE's Experiential Education Survey, almost 40% of employers reported a higher five-year retention rate among employees they'd hired via their internship programs.
  • Enhance perspective.  New people bring with them novel perspectives, fresh ideas, and specialized strengths, and skill sets. These augment the abilities of your professional workforce.
  • Intellectual capital.  Interns bring current technology and ideas from the classroom to the workplace, thereby increasing an organization’s intellectual capital.
  • Gain brand advocates.  Hiring an intern helps spread the word about your company. If you’re have an impressive internship program, your interns will probably talk about their experience with peers, friends and family.
