The University System of Maryland (USM) offers full-time, daytime, undergraduate upper division programs in Montgomery County at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). These programs allow students to complete their first two years of college coursework at Montgomery College or another institution of higher education and then transfer seamlessly to the USG. USG provides students with all upper division coursework needed to complete the final two years for a bachelor's degree. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about USG.
From whom do participating students at USG receive their degree?
Participating students will be admitted to, taught by and will receive their degree from the accredited University System of Maryland institution that provides their selected program.
What student services are provided at USG?
The USG Office of Student Services is open year-round to assist prospective and current students in all areas of student services, including admission, financial aid, course registration, student life activities and more. Appointments and walk-in visits are available during business hours, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Mon.- Fri. Students can contact the USG Office of Student Services at 301-738-6023 or shadygrove@umd.edu.
What library services are provided at USG?
Library services at the Shady Grove Library and Media Center include access to over 200 online databases, free book delivery to and from all USM institutions and professional library staff assistance. Are computer facilities available for USG students?
Yes. USG's computer facilities are state-of-the-art, and provide students with access to the Internet, online services, a variety of software programs, printing services and several computer labs. In addition, USG offers free wireless network access for students in select locations.
When does orientation take place for USG students?
Orientation sessions are held in January for students admitted for the spring semester and over the summer for students admitted for the fall semester. During this session you will be provided information regarding USG's facilities, library services, computer services, student services and activities, student clubs and organizations and more. Specific dates, times and information will be sent to students upon their admission to one of the programs offered at USG.
Are student life activities offered at USG?
Yes. The USG Office of Student Services offers unique opportunities to participate in onsite student life and extracurricular activities, including a variety of workshops, speaker series, "theme" weeks, community service projects, student organizations and more.
What are the USG policies regarding international students?
All policies and procedures regarding admission, residency classification and obtaining and maintaining student visas are established by the institution offering the student's program.
Are child care services available for students?
If you need child care, USG will provide you with a referral to Montgomery College's Child Care Services at the Germantown, Rockville and Takoma Park campuses. Full- and half-day programs are available. For more
