Medical Care and Insurance Plans

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is a non-residential education center and does not offer health care services onsite. USG does, however, provide information regarding a variety of services and insurance plans available to students. It is the student's responsibility to obtain coverage where required and to arrange for all needed medical care. Information regarding available services and options for coverage are provided below.

Bowie State University

All Bowie State University (BSU) students enrolled full-time are required to carry health insurance.  Students may either provide proof of private health insurance or purchase insurance through American College Student Association- http://www.acsa.com/.  For more information call 1-888-488-2272 or 1-888-526-2272.

Towson University

Towson University (TU) requires all international students on F or J visas are automatically enrolled in the school-sponsored insurance plan as they are required to have health insurance according to Towson University policies. University of Baltimore

The costs of hospitalization, specialist care, diagnostic work-ups, and emergency care are incredibly high. The University of Baltimore Student Health and Accident Insurance Plan is designed to help students meet such costs whether in Baltimore or outside the area.  We are offering one policy that: serves students in both sickness and injury, provides prescription coverage, provides limited preventative health care services, and can also be purchased for spouses and children, by the semester or annually.  Informational brochures and registration forms can be picked up in the Business or Student Affairs offices.  All part-time and full-time students are eligible to enroll in the insurance program. The premium may be paid with the tuition payment in the Business Office. University of Maryland, Baltimore

As a full-time student you are required to carry and provide evidence of health insurance. If you do not carry health insurance on your own, you may purchase a policy through the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB)'s Office of Student Accounts. For more information or to enroll for coverage, students may contact UMB's Office of Student Accounts at 410.706.2930.

University of Maryland Baltimore County

You are urged to carry your own health insurance, purchase insurance through the university, or apply for Maryland Medical Assistance. UMBC offers both domestic and international health insurance policies. International students who have J-1 or F-1 visas are REQUIRED to have health insurance that meets U.S. State Department requirements. University of Maryland, College Park

You are encouraged to carry hospitalization insurance. You must be sure that current insurance will provide needed coverage. If it does not, a student health insurance plan is available through the University of Maryland, College Park. MAMSI Life and Health Insurance Company provides health insurance designed for UMCP students. It provides coverage for accidents and illnesses. You may sign up for MAMSI during the open enrollment periods at the beginning of each term or within 30 days of being removed from another policy. Information about MAMSI is mailed to students prior to fall and spring semesters or can be obtained from the University Health Center (UHC). University of Maryland Eastern Shore

University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) does not provide health insurance for its students. UMES's Student Health Center does, however, provide information about special student-rate insurance plans for those needing health insurance coverage. It is highly recommended that you have complete health coverage. For more information about available insurance plans, students may contact UMES's Student Health Center at 410.651.2200.

University of Maryland University College

In accordance with our focus on the nontraditional and part-time student, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) does not require that you carry health insurance. UMUC does not offer any institutionally sponsored health insurance programs. You may wish to pursue other privately based health insurance programs and health and wellness resources as provided here.

Nearby Shady Grove Hospital offers an array of valuable health care services including emergency services, inpatient and outpatient services, obstetrics and gynecology, prevention and wellness services, physical therapy, radiology, cardiology, a variety of health related classes, seminars and more. Run by Adventist Health Care, it offers services by appointment or on a walk-in basis as needed. The hospital is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Shady Grove Hospital accepts persons with and without health insurance and accepts a wide variety of health insurance plans.
