B.S. in Health Systems Management
Program Information
The University of Baltimore offers the B.S. in Health Systems Management at the Universities at Shady Grove in a convenient, weekend format.
The program is designed to provide the initial undergraduate education for professional careers in health services management. Students with degrees in the allied health fields -- nursing, radiology, physical therapy assisting and others -- will find this academic program designed to assist them in making the transition into management positions.
Students gain an awareness of the interplay of social, political, economic, technological, cultural and environmental factors of health services management and administration.
The curriculum includes courses in accounting, health-care management, epidemiology, health-care law, risk management, health policy and a variety of upper-level health management courses.
Why study health systems management?
Montgomery County and the D.C. metropolitan area are attempting to deal with a number of health-care issues, such as expanding access to affordable health care, reducing the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, providing coverage for low-income or uninsured children and eliminating health disparities among minority residents. To deal with these issues, health-care institutions will have to have a highly educated workforce that can manage change in a turbulent environment. This program will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out administrative functions within the diverse health-care organizations found in the area.
What is the weekend format?
Students have the opportunity to complete the program in a combination of weekend courses and online courses. Classes are held Saturdays, in ten-week sessions. Students are encouraged to take two classes a semester in this format, and they have the opportunity to take additional upper-level general-education courses, electives or program requirements online during the regular school semester.
