Applying for Admissions

Students applying for admission to UMCP's Criminology & Criminal Justice program at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) must complete the UMCP/USG admission application (currently available only in hardcopy form). Applications are available from USG's Office of Student Services, located in the lobby of 9630 Gudelsky Dr., Rockville, MD 20850, or from Stephanie White, Criminology & Criminal Justice Program Assistant, at 301-738-6031 or swhite@crim.umd.edu. In conjunction with submitting an application, applicants are encouraged to complete an applicant advising session (walk-in during open office hours, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm on Tuesdays, in Room 4092 in Bldg. II).

Application Deadlines 

Admissions occur on a rolling basis. Students who wish to be considered for entry in the Fall Semester should submit an application by June 1 for priority consideration. After June 1, qualified applicants are admitted on a space-available basis. Students who wish to be considered for entry in the Spring Semester should first inquire with the Director about mid-year enrollment, and apply by November 1.

Requirements for Admission

Applicants should have an overall GPA of 2.5 of better, and a grade of "C" or better in each of the four courses specifically required by the major (CCJS 100, CCJS 105, CCJS 230, and Intro. Statistics, or their equivalents). Applicants should also attain junior standing (56 or more transferable college credits) by the time of enrollment. Admissions Review Process

Once an application is complete, the Director will review the application and notify the applicant of his or her admission status. Decisions are made on a rolling-basis. Applicants typically receive written notification of their admission decision 1-2 months after submitting a complete application.
