M.A. in Publications Design

(Coming Fall 2007)

Program Information

The University of Baltimore offers the M.A. in Publications Design at the Universities at Shady Grove in a convenient, weekend format.

This master's program combines theory and practice while exploring writing, graphic design, audio/video/multimedia production and media analysis through both traditional and new media. The curriculum is based on direct research and consultation with professionals throughout the corporate and nonprofit sectors to best prepare students for careers spanning the communications field. Students come to the program from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds, and while many already have experience as writers or designers, it is not a requirement. The program's faculty includes innovative, respected professionals in communications, writing and publishing from throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Why study publications design?

Those who are skilled in integrating professional writing and graphic design can easily pursue careers in a wide spectrum of disciplines: public relations, advertising, corporate publications, journalism, magazine editing and designing and more. Being adept at communicating both visually and verbally can make you an asset in the corporate world, while electing courses in hypermedia can prepare you for work in the rapidly growing medium of electronic publishing.

How is the program organized?

The streamlined course requirements for this 36-credit program include a 6-credit, team-taught threshold class and courses that examine advanced writing, typography, hypermedia and backgrounds and ideas that inform writing and design. Students develop portfolios through a specifically dedicated course and can pursue professional internships in every area of the communications field at businesses and organizations throughout the Baltimore-Washington area.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the M.A. in Publications Design program, an applicant must have obtained a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a 3.0 GPA or better, except when a submitted portfolio and a 2.8 GPA or better indicate high potential.
