Inter-Institutional Registration (IIR) Policies and Procedures

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to take courses from other University System of Maryland Institutions offering courses at USG to augment their degree program under the Concurrent Inter-Institutional Registration program.

Terms and Definitions

Home Institution is defined as the institution at which the student has been admitted and is enrolled as an undergraduate degree candidate.

Host Institution is the institution at which the student is registered to pursue courses through this cooperative agreement.

  • Enrollment in courses is on a space available basis and visiting students are expected to meet prerequisites or other criteria set by the host institution.
  • Tuition and fees are paid at the home institution; however, fees at the host institution associated with special courses may be assessed.
  • To participate in the Inter-Institutional Concurrent Registration Program students must:
    • Receive permission from the home institution to participate in the program
    • have sophomore standing
    • be in good academic standing
    • be enrolled full-time in a degree program at the home institution for the semester in which the course(s) are taken. Full-time status is defined as a combination of credits registered for at the home institution and the registered credits at the host institution.
    • have the approval from their dean, USG Program Director, or appropriate department approval authority for the course to count as resident credit
    • comply with the host institution's registration procedures and deadlines

Registration Procedures

  1. Review the list of courses eligible for USG Inter-Institutional Registration located on the USG website.
  2. Contact your home institution USG Program Director to obtain approval to enroll in the course(s) you have selected.
  3. Obtain an Inter-Institutional Registration form from your Program Director or from the USG Office of Student Services, located in the lobby of SGII.
  4. Complete and sign form and forward to your USG Program Director who will complete the signature process for you.
  5. The Program Director will forward the form to the USG Office of Student Services for processing.
  6. Registration will be according to the host institution's policies and deadlines. Fees at the host institutions associated with special courses may be assessed.
  7. Upon completion of the course the host institution will forward an official transcript to the home institution reflecting the grade(s) earned in the course(s) taken there. The home institution will post the grade(s) to the student's record. A notation that course(s) were taken as part of the Inter-Institutional program, and where the course(s) were taken will appear on the transcript. Course grades will be calculated in the student's grade point average and academic totals at the home institution.
