Community Colleges

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) provides upper level education (junior level and above) for students who have completed their freshman and sophomore level courses (approximately 60 credits) prior to transferring to USG. Transfer students may enroll in one of several select programs from the University System of Maryland's institutions, while attending courses at our state-of-the-art center located in Montgomery County. Transfer students are able to complete all required coursework needed for a bachelor's degree and also continue their education by enrolling in one of our master's or doctoral level programs.

This page provides information on area community colleges, from which many students transfer to USG. As noted below, several institutions are "featured" in accordance with their special relationship with USG. These featured institutions have been selected in accordance with their close proximity, program articulation and smooth transfer processes.

Montgomery College

Through a unique partnership with Montgomery College students can complete their four-year baccalaureate education entirely in Montgomery County. Area students may complete their first two years of coursework (often leading to an associate's degree) at nearby Montgomery College (MC) and transfer to USG to complete the final two years of study needed for a bachelor's degree. Due to the special collaborative relationship between USG and MC, students transferring from MC will benefit from a seamless transfer process, articulated programs and smooth transfer of academic credit. Montgomery College serves as USG's largest transfer institution with approximately 59 percent of USG students transferring from a Montgomery College campus.

Montgomery College is the oldest community college in Maryland, serving both Montgomery County and the region for more than 60 years. Montgomery College has earned a reputation as one of the best in the nation for its quality and scope of academic programs in the liberal arts, science, business and technology. The college offers more than 125 degree and certificate programs for students who wish to pursue an associate's degree, transfer to a four-year college or university, enter into the job market or upgrade career skills. Spanning Montgomery County, Montgomery College has three campuses located in Rockville, Takoma Park and Germantown. In addition to their accredited course offerings, MC offers courses in workforce development and continuing education at all three campuses and at satellite facilities around the country.

Frederick Community College

Frederick Community College (FCC) is a comprehensive educational institution that has served thousands of students and the community's needs for more than 40 years. The college offers affordable transfer, career and continuing education programs to area residents. FCC now serves more than 12,000 diverse students each year on its Opossumtown Pike campus. Students may choose programs for career or job advancement or select from one of their 69 associate degree programs.

Howard Community College

Approximately 43 percent of all undergraduates from Howard County are enrolled at HCC. Prince George's Community College

Today, Prince George's Community College serves approximately 35,000 students a year and offers more than 60 programs of study. Both academic and career focused offerings are provided, including an array of courses in the arts, sciences, business and the social sciences. Prince George's Community College also offers hundreds of noncredit continuing education courses and dozens of continuing education programs. Areas of study include occupational training in law enforcement, locksmithing, and computer software as well as hundreds of personal enrichment courses.

The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) offers more than 60 degree and certificate options, self-paced learning programs, continuing education and more. In addition to the traditional live classroom offerings, CCBC courses are offered via the World Wide Web, television and distance learning labs, through the Weekend College and at convenient extension centers in Owings Mills, Hunt Valley, Towson, White Marsh and Point Breeze.

Hagerstown Community College

Hagerstown Community College (HCC) provides instruction in the liberal arts, science and technology, continuing education, development education and special certificate programs. HCC offers more than 40 programs of study for transfer to a four-year institution or for immediate career preparation. Degrees awarded are Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science. One-year certificates are also awarded. The college has an extensive noncredit program providing lifelong learning opportunities and professional training.

Northern Virginia Community College

In its 37th year of service, Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) provides lower level educational opportunities to residents through its campuses in Alexandria, Annandale. Loudoun, Manassas, Woodbridge and through "extended learning" course formats. NVCC offers a wide range of programs meeting standards for transfer to baccalaureate degree programs in four-year colleges and universities.
