USG Announces New Board of Advisor Members
ROCKVILLE, MD - The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) announced today that it has named Martin Colburn of NASD, Dr. Carol Eaton of Frederick Community College, and Verl Zanders of Z-Tech Corporation to the USG Board of Advisors.
"These dynamic executives and leaders in our community will add to the expertise of our Board of Advisors as the Universities at Shady Grove is preparing to open new state-of-the-art facilities that will triple our student enrollment capacity and bring the campus into a new era," said Stewart Edelstein, executive director of USG.
Martin Colburn is one of the first USG alumni to join the board. He is currently executive vice president and chief technology officer at NASD, which has headquarters in Rockville. NASD is the leading private sector provider of financial regulatory systems serving more than 5,100 brokerage firms and 659,000 registered securities representatives. Prior to joining NASD, Colburn served as chief operating officer and chairman of the Australia Asia Joint Venture for Metiom, Inc, and as senior vice president of the technology management center at Fannie Mae. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Montgomery College and later attended USG while earning his Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Dr. Carol Eaton is president of Frederick Community College (FCC), a key source of new students for USG's 50-plus degree programs. She joined FCC in 2005 after a nationwide search. Prior to joining FCC, Dr. Eaton served as Vice Chancellor of Community Colleges at the State Universities of New York (SUNY). She earned her degrees from the State University of New York beginning with an Associate in Applied Science in Data Processing, and then a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. She earned her master's degree in Mathematics Education and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education. Frederick Community College is an accredited, two-year, degree-granting institution serving 17,000 students annually.
Verl Zanders is chairman and chief executive officer of Z-Tech Corporation, a Rockville-based company offering skills and services in advanced computer-based information technologies, system engineering, systems integration and telecommunications. Z-Tech was named "Emerging Business of the Year" by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce in 2006, and earned the Government Contracting Firm of the Year by the Tech Council of Maryland. It also received the 2006 Future 50 Award from Smart CEOMagazine. Z-Tech was listed as number two on 2005 Washington Technology Fast 50 List of Government Contractor sand it is one of the top contractors for the Federal Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). Zanders earned a bachelors degree in business administration from Antioch College.
Members of the Universities at Shady Grove Board of Advisors represent area business, scientific and educational institutions. They provide critical guidance and leadership to USG, and with their strong support are helping build and grow USG's capacity to bring more higher education opportunities into the Montgomery County region.
The Universities at Shady Grove is an innovative model for delivering top-quality college degree programs. USG is not one university; instead it is a collaboration of eight leading public universities in Maryland offering more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Montgomery County. Established in 2000, the USG campus currently serves 2,223 full- and part-time students who take classes days, evenings and weekend. USG will triple its enrollment capacity in fall 2007 with the opening of its new state-of-the-art building.
