USG Board of Advisors Pledge to Create New Scholarships to Help Students Transferring from Community Colleges
ROCKVILLE, MD - The Board of Advisors at the Universities at Shady Grove announced it is establishing a one million dollar scholarship fund designed expressly for students transferring from community colleges to attend USG while earning their bachelor degrees from Maryland's top public universities.
"Access to financial resources is a serious issue facing
transfer students," said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, USG executive
director. "Many of our USG students have to balance studies with
family and work responsibilities. In fact, more than 70% of our
full-time, undergraduate students work to fund their educational
expenses."
"USG's Board of Advisors has stepped aup to help hardworking
transfer students who want to complete their baccalaureate degrees
close to home and who find financial resources a major challenge,"
he said. Each member of the board of advisors has made a commitment
to the scholarship program and to build the opportunities for
students here in Montgomery County.
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is creating the Deborah Yancer Endowed Scholarship, named to honor the past president of the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and the outgoing chair of the USG Board of Advisors.
The Cliff and Camille Kendall Foundation and the Tech Council of Maryland have jointly funded scholarships for technology and biotechnology students enrolled at Maryland community colleges to use as transfer scholarships to any of the colleges and universities in Maryland.
Faculty, staff and students are also contributing to this cause, Edelstein noted. USG students have just donated $1,500 to the "Students Helping Students" scholarship after a successful fundraising dinner organized by students for future USG scholars.

The Universities at Shady Grove is an innovative model for delivering top-quality college degree programs. USG is not one university; instead it is a collaboration of eight leading public universities in Maryland offering more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Montgomery County. Established in 2000, the USG campus currently serves 2,223 full- and part-time students who take classes days, evenings and weekend. USG will triple its enrollment capacity in fall 2007 with the opening of its new state-of-the-art building.
