The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is teaming up with the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company (CBRC) to combine sustainability, art, and scholarships this fall. The 2013-2014 CanU Scholarship contest offers undergraduate students enrolled in a program at USG the chance to win a $2500 scholarship for designing an original mural that demonstrates three ways to save the Chesapeake Bay.

The winning mural, intended to be instructional and inspirational, will be housed in the Green Education Room of the Camille Kendall Academic Center. Students are asked to develop a mural that reflects their understanding of sustainability and demonstrates three ways to promote water conservation and preserve the Chesapeake Bay. Designs must be original artwork, created with traditional art media or digital design, and submitted on a foam board. The winning design will be created at approximately 8 ft. by 12 ft. in final format.

The Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company has supplied USG with coffee products sold on campus since fall 2011. CBRC’s fair trade, organic coffees are roasted in the Sirocco roaster, a specially designed hybrid that uses 78% less energy and reduces emissions by 80% over traditional roasters in use today. As a leader in sustainability in Montgomery County, USG is proud to partner with CBRC in an effort to promote environmentally friendly practices and conservation of the Chesapeake Bay.
