College Students Seeking Healthcare Degrees to Benefit

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) has received a $30,000 grant from the Healthcare Initiative Foundation to benefit USG students seeking healthcare-related degrees during the 2011- 2012 academic year. The grant is intended to bolster Montgomery County’s healthcare workforce.

“We are honored to accept this Healthcare Initiative Foundation grant and will proudly help the Foundation fulfill its charter to improve healthcare in Montgomery County, Maryland as we educate students seeking careers in nursing, respiratory therapy, public health science, health systems management, and other areas related to USG’s undergraduate degree programs in healthcare,” said Stewart Edelstein, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Executive Director at USG.

The grant will allow for USG to offer more than a dozen scholarships to students in healthcare programs during the next two semesters, and will help fulfill the Foundation’s mission of improving healthcare in Montgomery County by aiding local students pursuing healthcare careers.

“Beginning this fall, many nursing and other healthcare students at USG will be awarded individual scholarships because of the Foundation’s commitment to healthcare in Montgomery County,” said Dr. Rebecca Wiseman, Assistant Dean and Program Director, UMB School of Nursing. “Scholarships like these allow our students to make academics and internships a top priority.”

The Healthcare Initiative Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that provides grants solely to improve healthcare in Montgomery County, Maryland.
