Photo Workshop on Diversity by Lloyd Wolf

Sept. 17th 1-3PM or 22nd 11-1PM

This workshop is designed for all beginning and intermediate photographers to improve their technical skills and their vision. We will focus on getting each participant to be able to use their camera more effectively, particularly in portraying people in candid and natural-light portrait situations. The goal of the workshop is to help USG students be more confident in creating interesting and well-made photographs from their own lives and experience, highlighting the theme of cultural diversity.

Each person will need to bring:

  • The camera they use (cell phone cameras are fine, if you do not own another camera).
  • A set of five good-quality 8 x 10 prints or digital files for critique/evaluation. These photos can be brought to the workshop on a flashdrive.
  • Open mind and eyes, and an eagerness to learn and share.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Basic effective composition of a picture. Hints, techniques, rules, and rules to be broken.
  • How to use light. Understanding and using light to work for you.
  • Review of camera operation and functions (depth of field, color balance, shutter speed, flash basics, etc.).
  • Photographing people – creating both posed and candid pictures. Issues, ideas, examples to emulate and avoid. Ethics, courtesy, strategies, people-to-people skills.
  • Basic Photoshop and other image editing programs (Gimp, Lightroom, Photomechanic, Picassa, etc.).
  • Finishing your work – quality printing, blogs, online photo-storage sites, social media
