On September 2, 2014 the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) hosted Congressman John K. Delaney and the Honorable Thomas E. Perez, United States Secretary of Labor, for a forum on the topic of workforce development entitled, “Preparing Today for Tomorrow’s Success.” In addition to Congressman Delaney and Secretary Perez, panelists included: Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, President of Montgomery College; Mr. Diego Uriburu, Executive Director of Identity Inc.; and Mr. Patrick J. Caulfield, co-owner of Coakley & Williams Construction Inc. The panel discussion was moderated by USG’s Executive Director, Dr. Stewart Edelstein.

The panel discussed the investments needed in education and training to build a highly skilled workforce to support job growth and economic development. Topics ranged from American competitiveness, connecting skilled job seekers with careers, the role of education in workforce development, community involvement, and training to meet employer needs and expectations.

Secretary Perez stated that partnerships with businesses are key to building a skilled workforce. “We have to prepare our children with the differentiated skills for the future. Regardless of your zip code and station in life, you have the opportunity for upward mobility.”

Congressman Delaney also stressed that investing in workforce development for middle-class jobs is essential to preparing America for a strong, competitive future. “We need to respond to globalization and technology – we need a strategic vision to compete.” Delaney cited USG as a “partnership that works” in Montgomery County. USG accomplishes this by creating internships between students and local businesses, as well as offering career advising that gives students the tools they need to be successful in today’s workforce.
