The Madison House Autism Foundation and the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) are hosting the "Through Our Eyes" art exhibit in USG's Priddy Library throughout the month of April. The exhibit features over 85 pieces of art from 40 artists who are on the autism spectrum, with the goal of bringing awareness to the unique talents and characteristics of adults with autism. A special reception, hosted by Fox 5 ’s Emmy award-winning meteorologist Sue Palka, was held on April 3rd and included the musical talents of autistic pianist Jack A. Holtz and a special concert by performer Chou Chou Scantlin. As an autistic woman, Scantlin’s message is for everyone to love and be loved as they are; a theme which suited the evening perfectly.

Local artists included in the exhibit include abstract expressionistic artist Trent Altman and impressionist painter Esther Brockaw, who has been compared to Van Gogh, Monet and Cassatt. Painter Dashir Johnson stated, “I am an artist who happens to be in the autistic spectrum. My artwork depicts the beauty I see in everyone. I represent those with ‘differences’ and my hope is the world sees the same beauty and finds acceptance through my eyes.”

Named in honor of their now 24-year-old autistic son, the Madison House Autism Foundation was founded in 2008 by Dr. Gregory and JaLynn Prince. The organization is dedicated to creating awareness of the lifespan challenges adults with autism and their families face. Madison House works to develop and promote opportunities that allow the steadily growing number of adults with autism to live as independently as possible, hold jobs, and participate as members of society.

Among the organizations sponsoring the “Through Our Eyes” art exhibit are: PNC Bank, Comcast, and Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care. To learn more about the Madison House and how you can get involved, click here.
