Sterling Crockett, chief executive officer of the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company and member of the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) Board of Advisors, announced Rachel Reizes as the winner of the inaugural CanU scholarship contest for her original artwork representing sustainability and conservation of the Chesapeake Bay.

Reizes, a senior in the University of Maryland, College Park B.A. Communication program at USG, was awarded a $2500 scholarship sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company.

“This scholarship has helped with my tuition, cutting my student bill in half,” said Reizes. “Since I pay for school myself, it relieved some financial burden.”

The mural created by Reizes will be displayed in the Green Education Room of the Camille Kendall Academic Center. The original design will be created at approximately 8 ft. by 12 ft. in final format.

Submissions for the contest were judged by a committee of representatives from Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, USG, as well as sustainability professionals from local community.

“I think sustainability is important to help our earth we live on to stay beautiful,” said Reizes.

The Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company has supplied USG with coffee products sold on campus since fall 2011. CBRC’s fair trade, organic coffees are roasted in the Sirocco roaster, a specially designed hybrid that uses 78% less energy and reduces emissions by 80% over traditional roasters in use today.

Congratulations, Rachel!
