Dr. Irwin Goldstein

Dr. Irwin Goldstein Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs

University System of Maryland

Senior vice chancellor for academic affairs for the University System of Maryland (USM), has been a member of the Board of Advisors (BOA) since it was created in 2000. As an academic administrator he brings to the BOA an understanding of the complexities involving in operating a regional higher education center.

He says that a tribute to USG's success is the ability of eight of Maryland's public colleges and universities to work collaboratively to bring top undergraduate and graduate programs to Montgomery County. He notes that while there are many states with regional higher education centers, USG is unique because it is the only one with a consortium of schools at one location.

Additionally, he says that USG has grown because it has developed a cooperative relationship with Montgomery College allowing for a seamless transition for students who earn their associates degree and wish to continue their education at a USM school at Shady Grove. This access has made it possible for many students to receive a college degree while working and living at home.

Goldstein began his academic career as an assistant professor at Ohio State University. He then became a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park where he later became dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

In 2001, he received the University of Maryland President's Medal in recognition of his "extraordinary contributions to the intellectual, cultural and social life of the University." In addition to the award from the University of Maryland, College Park, he has earned other honors including the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the Swanson Award for research excellence from the American Society for Training and Development.
