Daniel Zevallos is busy directing another film for his next school project.

Daniel is a communication major at the University of Maryland, College Park at USG. He is pursuing his dream of becoming a film director. Each semester communication students create films to enter into the UMD at USG Student Film Festival. Daniel has entered four films so far, winning accolades and awards for all of them.

Daniel created the USG Film Club, which is a forum for film students to network, talk about their projects, bring in guest speakers and provide inspiration. Daniel is also gaining film experience through his internship as a Production Assistant with Good Fight Media, a documentary production house located in Washington D.C.

Respiratory Therapy Students

A team of students from Salisbury University’s respiratory therapy program at USG, finished second in the nation at the 37th national Sputum Bowl in Las Vegas.

Despite being named after a respiratory secretion, it is a very serious intellectual competition similar to “It’s Academic.”  The bracket-style, double-elimination event featured 10-minute rounds and was held over several days of the December conference. The team finished second among 21 teams, competing in the finals against a team from Colorado.

Held during the American Association for Respiratory Care’s international conference, the largest conference of its type in the world, the Sputum Bowl attracts students from all over the country after having won at their state competitions.

“Campuses are pitted against one another to be crowned the smartest respiratory students in the nation,” said Dr. Robert Joyner, associate dean of SU’s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology and director of the respiratory therapy program. “Employers look for these types of successes on students’ resumes.”

Team members  included: USG senior Sara Stang of Glenwood, MD; USG senior Kenny Jacobson of Rockville, MD; USG senior Nikki Trankley of Taneytown, MD; and Salisbury senior Brian Sherman of Dunbarton, NH; along with USG faculty advisor, Sangeeta Mathur.

Global Healthcare Students

Over the summer six University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) students at The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) participated in UMB’s Global Healthcare Initiative Program. Five students from the University of Maryland, School of Nursing and one student from the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy were selected. The students and the country they visited were: Blerta Hamza (Philippines), Emma Branzell (Philippines), Anne Giampietro (Philippines), Elizabeth Shannon Walters (Malawi), Bryan Chung (Gambia) and Mary Li (Kenya).

The trips ranged from one to six weeks and the students visited hospitals, clinics, and family households. The students worked in interprofessional teams to aid in the discovery, development and treatment of healthcare to improve global health issues. These collaborations provided interprofessional engagement on an international level and have resulted in an enriched student learning experience.
