Student Organization Mission Statements

Accounting Business Association (ABA)

The purpose of the organization is to provide opportunities for personal, academic and professional development for students interested in the accounting profession, through regular meetings, professional speakers, community service and social activities. The organization functions under the auspices and with the guidance of the Accounting Department of the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

American Library Association Student Chapter at University of Maryland (ALA@UMD)

The purpose and aims of this organization are:
1. To facilitate and encourage participation in the American Library Association
2. To increase awareness and use of the resources of the American Library Association, including publications, promotional material, scholarships, and conferences.
3. To provide the members of this organization with official representation to the American Library Association.
4. To provide a local forum that allows members to exchange ideas and discuss issues affecting the profession of librarianship.
5. To promote involvement in professional activities beyond the classroom.
6. To encourage professional contacts within the field of librarianship.

Biology Engaging Students Together (B.E.S.T)

To promote awareness concerning Biological Sciences through campus and community involvement, examine ways of helping students studying Biological Sciences succeed, and promote a social outlet for the new students to become accustomed to the Universities at Shady Grove.

Campus Kitchens

We dedicated order time, effort and culinary arts backgrounds to our community by volunteering to help feeding those in need. Also, we bring together students from other organizations and teach them how to cook sanitary and delicious food for the families in need.

Chess Club

The purpose of the club is to allow students and staff to be able to learn or play the game of chess. During such time, it will allow them to focus on something other than school. And in the process, it will build and develop skills for set person.

Construction Management Student Club (CMSC)

The CMSC offers students the opportunity to learn and be involved in the construction management profession and to network and develop relationships with potential employers.

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

The purpose of CEC shall be to promote professional standards of a high order and improve the preparation of all professionals dealing with persons with exceptionalities. It shall further be the purpose of this organization to promote programs designed to enhance the professional development of its members in serving children and youth with exceptionalities and to disseminate information to inform the public of the needs of persons with exceptionalities at the local, state/provincial, regional, and international levels. It shall also be the purpose of this organization to interest and involve all students concerned with the welfare of children and youth with exceptionalities.

Criminology & Criminal Justice Student Association (CRIMSA)

CRIMSA is established for the express purpose of providing students enrolled in the University of Maryland’s Program in Criminology & Criminal Justice (hereafter “CCJS”) at Universities at Shady Grove activities of CRIMSA may include functions and events of an intellectual, social, cultural, or charitable nature, as well as those activities that promote the academic and professional success of future, current, and graduation CCJS student. CRIMSA Understands and is committed to fulfilling is responsibilities of abiding by University of Maryland, College Park and Universities at Shady Grove (hereafter “USG”) rules, regulations and policies.

Dean’s Advisory Group for Robert H. Smith School of Business

To represent the Robert H. Smith student community at Shady Grove by expressing student concerns and ideas to the Dean of Undergraduate Programs for the improvement of the programs and the building of community. We work to bring together the Shady Grove RHS student organizations with those in UMCP main campus. Our mission is to enhance the communication and networks. We also bring up concerns to our Dean’s to make our voice heard.

Digital Entertainment Makers Organization (D.E.M.O)

This is the Digital Entertainment Makers Organization (DEMO). Our purpose is to explore new ideas in our field, work out our own innovations, and share our fun with others who may not be as in depth in the field.

GroVets Organization

History Student Association (HSA)

HSA is designed to provide students, who have an interest in history, with activities and events that make history interesting and accessible. Our goal is to create a community of students, with similar interest, to explore history outside of a rigorous academic setting.

The purpose of LLRCA is to serve as a resource and support system for students interested in law or law-related careers. LLRCA provides and increases awareness of professional development and networking opportunities through LLRCA meetings, professional speaker seminars, and social events.

Maryland Venture Partners (MVP)

Maryland Venture Partners, a student organized business incubator, creates a secure environment where innovation and new ventures can grow and thrive by assembling resources into a cohesive ecosystem. Members will be able to communicate new venture ideas to fellow members and mentors for advice and constructive criticism. If a venture idea is deemed to be a viable business, the MVP will provide the tools necessary to pursue further development of the venture.

Peace, Openness, and Passion (P.O.P)

Political Science Student Organization (PSSO)

The purpose of this organization shall be:
1. To form an effective and efficient governing body serving the collective interests of Political Science students;
2. To make partnerships with various organizations in the Political Science community that provide opportunities for fellow Political Science students to address career-related aspirations;
3. To enhance awareness of the study of Political Science by sponsoring public forums, panel discussions and other events to further enlighten the campus community on current cutting-edge topics and other subjects concerning the study of political science;
4. To enrich the campus community experience for the student body of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Shady Grove Campus

Psychology Student Association (PSA)

• Function as a support system for undergraduate students
• Provide students with information for appropriate agencies that may be able to provide solutions to their problems/concerns
• Increase students’ awareness of and involvement in departmental activities

• Hold fundraising activities

Social Work Student Association (SWSA)

The Shady Grove Social Work Student Association aims to promote interest in social work and social issues. SWSA organizes service opportunities to benefit local communities, and support programs and events designed to serve, educate, and entertain social work students, as well as the USG community.

Student Council

The mission of the Student Council is to serve as a student advocacy and advisory group which acts as a liaison between the students and administration of USG to communicate on behalf of the student population. The group also serves to identify and engage in activities which enhance the student experience and are supportive of the USG community at large.

Student Event Board (SEB)

The SEB is a student event programming board comprised of current USG students and overseen by the Office of Student Services. Through collaboration, teamwork and dedication SEB sponsors a wide variety of out-of-class events, activities and programs. SEB enhances the overall quality of student life at USG by providing entertaining, educational and cultural programs and events that compliment the learning experience.

Student Section of Maryland Public Health Association (SMDPHA)

The missions of this organization shall be:
To improve public health awareness in Maryland through education and advocacy. To promote public awareness relative to healthcare disparities* among different segments of the population. To serve as a resource for and to work collaboratively with other student organizations that performs community outreach programs. To encourage, support and provide resources for members who are interested in learning about and/or pursuing a pharmacy, public health or allied-health career. To provide opportunities for members to exchange ideas, to be expose to various healthcare disparity issues, and to participate in professional development activities related to public health issues.

Terps Without Borders (TWB)

Undergraduate Communication Association (UCA)

The Undergraduate Communication Association offers unique opportunities for students to build lasting relationships learn more about the discipline and gain professional experience. Members of the UCA at Shady Grove have previously sponsored professional networking programs, participated in technology workshops and created social events to enhance the undergraduate experience among Communication students.

University of Maryland Association of Nursing Students (UMANS)

UMANS is the University of Maryland's Chapter of the National Student Nurses Organization at Shady Grove. We involve students in community volunteering, speak to young people about nursing and health, and raise funds for a variety of projects.

"The NSNA mission is to: organize, represent and mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, as well as those enrolled in baccalaureate completion programs; convey the standards and ethics of the nursing profession; promote development of the skills that students will need as members of the nursing profession; advocate for high quality health care; advocate for and contribute to advances in nursing education; and develop nursing students who are prepared to lead the profession in the future." www.nsna.org

As the local chapter of the NSNA, we participate in the annual convention. Join NSNA at the website linked above. During the Convention you will be able to:
* Speak with other representatives from other nursing schools and hospitals across the country.
* Attend a variety of workshops
* Discuss issues important in your profession
