USG Scholarships & Awarding Process

In addition to federal and state grants awarded on the basis of financial need, various private scholarships are available for students at USG as provided by local businesses, foundations, community organizations and individual donors. While students are encouraged to apply for any scholarship (as available nationwide) for which they qualify, the following is a listing of awards designated specifically for students enrolled in programs at USG.

 

Awards List

Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA/Bethesda)

Scholarships will be used for transfer students from Montgomery College transferring in the Universities at Shady Grove that have previously received an AFCEA Bethesda scholarship from Montgomery College and continue to meet the eligibility requirements below (1st priority), or new/current students that meet the criteria below. Funds may be used to cover in-state tuition fees only. Eligible students may receive up to $2000.00 per academic year from the scholarship program.

Eligibility requirements for the scholarship awards:

  1. Enrolled in fields of Curriculum including: Simulation and Digital Entertainment, Computer & Information Science, Computer Studies, Computer Information Technology, Information Assurance, Investigative Forensics, Information Systems Management or Biotechnology. Attending classes at The Universities at Shady Grove on a part or full time basis.
  2. U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  3. Demonstrated financial need as determined by the financial aid office
  4. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  5. High School graduate of a Montgomery County high School

 

Biology Engaging Students Together (BEST) Scholarship

This scholarship was established by USG���s BEST student organization in 2009 to assist students in the Biological Sciences program with the University of Maryland, College Park.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Enrolled a minimum of 12 credits per semester
  • Enrolled in the Biological Science Program at USG
  • Must be a member of Biology Engaging Students Together student organization

 

Board of Advisor Annual Scholarship Fund

The Board of Advisors Annual Scholarship fund was established by the USG Board of Advisors in 2007 to assist undergraduate students at USG who are succeeding academically but have financial challenges. To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate financial need and academic excellence
  • Be a full-time student

Award: The minimum award is $1000 annually.

 

Camille & Clifford Kendall Endowed Scholarship/USG Kendall Scholars Program

Clifford Kendall, a member of the Shady Grove Board of Advisors, and his wife Camille, have donated funds to the USM Foundation with the intention of providing at least twenty annual scholarships (by 2012) for students enrolled in programs at USG. Candidates must be juniors or senior students enrolled in a program at USG. USG Kendall Scholars are required to participate in a mentor/mentee program.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have demonstrated financial need (as determined by the FAFSA)
  • Show high potential for success
  • Intention of remaining in Maryland upon graduation
  • Demonstrated prior service to others

Award: The award covers tuition and fees.

 

Gertrude M. Eaton Board of Advisor Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is awarded to honor the dedication and service of Dr. Gertrude Eaton, the former executive director at USG. It is awarded on an annual basis to one eligible undergraduate, degree-seeking student enrolled in any of the programs offered at USG.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Enrolled a minimum of 12 credits per semester
  • Demonstrate both financial need and academic excellence

Award: The minimum award is $500 annually.

 

James W. & Mary K. Price Scholarship Fund

This endowment given to the University System of Maryland Foundation, was created by USG Board member, Bridget Price and her siblings, to honor the memory of their parents, James W. and Mary K. Price. This scholarship provides annual scholarship support to students attending programs offered at the Universities at Shady Grove.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • G.P.A. of at least a 3.0
  • Enrolled in a program offered at USG

Award: The award is $1,000 annually.

 

The Mark A. Borenstein Executive Director's Scholarship Fund

Established in honor of The Executive Director at The Universities at Shady Grove to be awarded to any student attending The Universities At Shady Grove at the Executive Director's Discretion.

MCPS/MC/USG Partnership Scholarship Fund

This fund has been established to provide scholarship support to students from Gaithersburg High School or Watkins Mill High School who attend Montgomery College and then transfer to a program at USG.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Attended either Gaithersburg High School or Watkins Mill High School
  • Transfer from Montgomery College to a program offered at USG
  • Demonstrate financial need and a potential for success

The Miriam & Chaim Bentzlovitch Scholarship Fund

The Miriam and Chaim Bentzlovitch Scholarship Fund at the University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. in honor and memory of Miriam and Chaim Bentzlovitch designate a $500.00 scholarship each year for Communication students attending The Universities at Shady Grove.

The Miriam and Chaim Bentzlovitch Scholarship will be awarded to a student or students who have demonstrated the following needs: Must be (a) Communication major at the Universities at Shady Grove for the duration of the scholarship; (b) rising senior standing (completed between 85-105 total credits and at least 9 credits at the Universities at Shady Grove); (c) overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Molly Caitlin Counihan Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is awarded to a student entering the Towson University dual certification program in Elementary and Special Education at the Universities at Shady Grove. To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be transferring from Montgomery College to the USG/Towson Education program
  • Hold a 2.75 GPA or higher
  • Incoming Junior or Senior

Award: The minimum award is $800 annually.

 

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Endowed Scholarship for the Health Professions

The Shady Grove Adventist Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for students attending programs at the Universities at Shady Grove and how are studying programs related to allied health professions.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a program at USG related to allied health professionals
  • Hold a 3.0 GPA or higher

Award: The minimum award is $2,000 annually and can be two students.

 

Shannon J. & Michael D. Priddy Endowed Scholarship Fund

This endowment given to the University System of Maryland Foundation provides annual scholarship support to students in information technology or related fields who are attending programs at the Universities at Shady Grove. To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student with demonstrated academic excellence
  • Show financial need
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in one of the technology fields

The Sterling & Florence Crockett Scholarship Endowment

This Endowed Scholarship Fund shall provide annual support to students who have an entrepreneurial spirit, including but not limited to students in the RH Smith School of Business and Students in the Construction Management Technology Programs who are attending the Universities at Shady Grove.

 

University System of Maryland Regents Scholar Program

The Regents Scholars Program is the most prestigious scholarship awarded by the University System of Maryland (USM). Regents Scholars are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic ability as well as strong motivation, exceptional character and a record of extracurricular accomplishments.

To qualify, student candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Maryland community college transfer student (received the Associate of Arts degree)
  • Have demonstrated financial need (as determined by the FAFSA)
  • Have completed a minimum of 56 credits
  • Hold a 4.0 GPA
  • Be enrolled in a full-time, daytime bachelor's degree at USG

Award: Covers the entire cost of in-state tuition and mandatory fees, in addition to a stipend to defray other academic expenses for four semesters. The scholarship is renewable each year if the student continues as a full-time student and maintains a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
