Requirements for Admission

Applicants should attain junior standing (defined as 56 or more transferable college credits) by the time of enrollment.

  • Applicants should have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better, and
  • a grade of "C" or better in each of the four courses specifically required by the major:

Students interested in transfering from Montgomery College are encoraged to consult the Recommended Transfer Program Evaluation for Montgomery College.

Students interested in transfering from Frederick Community College are encouraged to consult the Recommended Transfer Program Evaluation for Frederick Community College.

Transfer credits from other institutions

Students may determine the transferrability of their coursework from other institutions to the University of Maryland, College Park by looking up courses on the Transfer Credit Center's website.

Students wishing to apply for admission to the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at the Universities at Shady Grove must complete the online application.

Students who were previously enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park (either at main campus or at the Universities at Shady Grove) must also complete the readmissions/reenrollment application.

admissions Exceptions

Students who do not meet the credit-level requirement are admitted on a case-by-case basis. However, admission in such circumstances does not constitute a waiver of program requirements. Students will be required to complete or repeat any necessary lower-level coursework at either their previous institution or the University of Maryland, College Park.

Advising for Applicants

Students interested in applying for admission are encouraged to complete a Pre-Transfer Advising Form and to schedule an advising appointment.  To schedule an advising appointment, please send an e-mail to ccjsusg@crim.umd.edu or call (301) 738-6031.  Please bring the completed Pre-Transfer Advising Form and a copy of all transcripts to the appointment.

Deadlines

Admissions occur on a rolling basis. Students who wish to begin studies in the Fall Semester should submit an application by June 1 for priority consideration. After June 1, qualified applicants are admitted on a space-available basis. Students who wish to begin studies in the Spring Semester should first inquire with the Program Director about mid-year enrollment, and apply by November 15.
