Are you ready for a great year? I am delighted to welcome the largest class in our history to our growing and innovative campus. There's a remarkable energy here. It comes from the enthusiasm of our students, the close interaction between students and faculty, and a supportive staff. This year we have more programs and expanded services to help you succeed in your academic programs and with your career interests.
New to USG: This fall we added a ninth university partner as Salisbury University brings the only Maryland certified program in Respiratory Therapy here to USG. We're also welcoming seven other new degree programs from four University System of Maryland campuses. A special welcome to our new undergraduates and faculty in Early Childhood Education (TU) and History (UMBC) and to graduate students and faculty in the new Accounting, CITE, Human Development and Library Sciences programs (UMCP) and Geographic Information Systems (UMBC). I'm sure all of you will be enjoy visiting the newly constructed Model Pharmacy Laborary that will support the growth of the PharmD program started last year by the School of Pharmacy (UMB).
No other USM campus offers the diversity of degrees and certificates that are available here at USG - a portfolio designed to prepare you for professional careers that are in high demand in our region and state.
Student Life: Despite busy work and school schedules, I continue to be struck by the close-knit student community here at USG. It starts with the 20+ clubs, organizations and student professional societies and continues with the events and special workshops during the year. I encourage students to check out the offerings at our recreation center on the second floor of the Kendall Center. Congratulations to our new Student Council leaders, Student Activities Board and Student Ambassadors.
Academic Success: USG is committed to student success. That is why the Center for Academic Success offers tutoring, supplemental instructional and writing assistance. We even have a laptop loaner program. For more information, go to: (http://www.shadygrove.umd.edu/resources/student-services/cas/)
Career & Internship Center: The Career Services Center will be launching an online job listing and web-based recruiting program this fall. We're expanding our Center to help students find local and regional internships and entry-level jobs. Make an appointment for a counseling session about career opportunities.
Technology Advantage: State-of-the-art technology that supports high quality teaching and learning is a hallmark of USG. Students and faculty enjoy our smart classrooms, computer classrooms and open computer labs and distance learning facilities. I know you'll appreciate the wireless access in the classroom areas, library, and lounges throughout our campus.
Go Green: Our Camille Kendall Academic Center continues to earn design and green awards. That's no wonder since it is one of the top-ranked green buildings in the University System and the largest green educational building in the state. From the rooftop gardens to energy-saving systems, the Center represents USG's commitment to be an environmental steward for your future. You can join our green team making your own personal pledge. Please go to: (http://www.shadygrove.umd.edu/campus-sustainability/green-pledge/).
Student Success: USG students are prepared to make a difference. The Class of 08 is telling us about new jobs with top area employers like Accenture, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Envion International, Suburban Hospital, and Montgomery County Schools, among many others. What else would you expect? Students are our focus at USG and you make great things happen!
Wishing you all much success in the coming semester!
