Public Safety
The safety of its students, staff, and faculty is of the utmost concern for any size campus. In response to the ever growing population and changes at the Universities at Shady Grove, we have taken numerous steps to ensure the safety of all visitors to the Shady Grove campus. The mission of the public safety section of this website is to post current information about safety, emergency, and security policies and procedures for this campus, in order to help our visitors know what to do in the case of an emergency, notify them of safety concerns, to help promote a safe and healthy environment, and provide knowledge to prevent any potentially unsafe occurrances.
What should I do in case of an emergency on campus?
When a situation occurs on campus that you believe requires emergency medical attention or a crime has occurred, please dial 911 or ask some at the scene to dial 911 first from any phone on campus to reach Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and/or the Montgomery County Police. Once an emergency official is on the scene, if possible, please notify the USG sceurity guard stationed at the front of Building I, or by calling 202.528.5656 from any cell phone or outside line or #6600 from any campus phone. This will ensure that the appropriate staff member will be available to assist emergency officials.
In the case of a fire in the building, if possible:
- Locate the nearest fire alarm station and pull the handle to activiate the alarm
- Proceed to the nearest exit
- If you are in a office, classroom, or any other enclosed space please remember to close the door when exiting in an attempt to contain the fire and minimize the danger
NOTE: Phones in the classrooms are house phones and cannot dial outside the campus. If an emergency is occurring and you are not able to call outside to 911 please call #6600 and notify the security guard to call 911.
Who can I contact for non-emergency situations or safety issues on campus?
We have a security guard on duty 24 x 7 to handle all safety related and security issues that need immediate attention or that are of a non-emergency status. Our security guard performs regular patrols of the parking areas and both buildings during on-peak and off-peak hours. The security guard desk is located at the front of Building I. The guard can be reached by cell phone, 24 x 7 at 202.528.5656 or #6600 from any campus phone.
Emergency and/or Weather Related Closings
In the event of inclement weather or other emergency conditions, you should follow delays and closures for the "USM Shady Grove Center," rather than any individual participating USM institution. Closures and delays will be sent over the e2Campus notification system, as well as being reported on local radio and television news stations. You may also call USG at 301.738.6000 for recorded updates related to closures or delays.
